Next Steps

Congratulations! You made it to the end of the crash course for how to have an impactful career as an engineer. Each of us has an incredible opportunity to engineer positive change – we hope this has inspired you to consider how your career could make a huge difference.

Here are some concrete next steps for you to put these ideas into action.

Explore

Rather than relying on instinct, it’s a good idea to make sure you examine your worldview, explore different problems and career paths so that you become more confident about the best options for you. This could look like reading more about different cause areas, talking to different people in different areas, listening to our podcast for inspiration, or testing different types of work.

Make a Career Plan

If you’re unsure of your priorities and career path, it could be a good idea to make a career plan that allows you to clarify your uncertainties and options. Approaching your career like a scientist testing a hypothesis (by making careful decisions and adapting your plan as you learn more) could be a good way of building a better career over time.

Seek Community

Finding a good community can put you in touch with opportunities, like-minded people who want to pursue impact, and support - focusing your career on tackling the world’s most pressing problems is not easy. Our Slack community is a great way to find support, resources, and other like-minded people.

Speak to Us!

We at High Impact Engineers want to help you maximise the impact you have in your career. If you’ve worked through these ideas and would like to chat with someone about your particular situation, feel free to book a career conversation with us.
